Neuropathology

Our neuropathology service provides diagnostic interpretation of specimens from the brain, spinal cord, nerve, and muscle. We support neurosurgeons, neurologists, and oncologists with reports that connect the microscopic findings to the clinical and imaging picture.

Subspecialty Depth in Central Nervous System Disease

Central nervous system specimens are small, difficult to re-sample, and frequently require correlation with imaging and molecular findings before a diagnosis is firm. Our neuropathologists are fellowship trained and read these cases against that full context.

Areas of Evaluation

  • Brain and spinal cord tumors
  • Intraoperative consultation, where arranged in advance
  • Nerve and muscle biopsies
  • Inflammatory and demyelinating conditions
  • Neurodegenerative and metabolic disease
  • Immunohistochemistry and molecular studies when appropriate

Integrating Molecular Findings

Classification of many central nervous system tumors now depends on molecular as well as morphologic features. Where molecular testing is indicated, we advise on the appropriate studies and integrate the results into a single interpretation rather than leaving them to be reconciled separately. See molecular pathology.
